you should be filllllling that resume with as much experience as you can while you’re in school because we all know by now that just holding a degree isn’t enough anymore
an internship is a great way to show future employers/programs what you are capable of doing but its not necessary and they can be hard to get (very competitive depending on where you live and what opportunities are nearby)
additional experience options include:
- research projects
- I received funding through my school to do summer research projects my sophomore and junior year of college – this is a common option at many schools
- ask your favorite professor about opportunities to shadow them or work alongside them during the summer (they are working anyway!)
- teaching assistant positions
- i was the astronomy TA during semester for the astronomy 101 labs! this is a GREAT thing for the resume
- conferences
- make sure you have at least 1 conference presentation under your belt by the time you graduate. this typically includes completing a research project (standard for most STEM degrees) and presenting it at a conference
also, if you need to work a part-time job during school like i did, choose something that will give your resume some extra experience!
i worked at best buy as a geek squad agent during college. it was a GREAT resume builder to show that i can problem solve and can handle hardware/software (very important for careers!)
