Astronomy vs Astrophysics vs Physics – what’s the difference? What should I pick?

Physics

Physics is the most broad of the 3 – physics focuses on how the universe works, mathematical modeling of the universe and all of its constituents, fundamental laws of nature, problem solving, and theory/experimentation

You will study Mechanics, Electricity & Magnetism, Quantum Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Optics, Relativity, etc.

Physics is also usually the most flexible option because it applies to many industries (I personally got my Bachelor’s of Science in Physics!)

Good fit if you like: problem solving, math, broad career flexibility, understanding WHY things work

Astronomy

Astronomy focuses specifically on studying objects and phenomena in the universe.

Topics might include stars, galaxies, telescopes, observations, planets, cosmology, asteroids, etc.

Astronomy programs often include observing techniques, telescope operations, data reduction, image processing, and programming.

Good fit if you like: space!, observing, telescopes, learning about objects in the universe

Astrophysics

Astrophysics (in a nutshell) is the act of using physics to explain astronomy (this is what I’m getting my Master’s of Science in currently!)

Astrophysics asks questions like why do stars form? how do galaxies evolve? how do black holes work? what causes a supernovae?

Astrophysics usually includes more physics, more mathematics, more modeling, and more programming.

Good fit if you like: physics, math, programming, and understanding WHY objects behave the way they do

So Which Should You Pick?

Choose Physics if:

  • You want maximum flexibility
  • You are unsure what you want
  • You enjoy math and theory
  • You want strong backup options outside astronomy

Choose Astronomy if:

  • You know you love space
  • You enjoy observations and telescopes
  • Your school has a strong astronomy program

Choose Astrophysics if:

  • You love physics and space
  • You enjoy mathematical explanations
  • You want the most physics-heavy space option
