Do I need a physics degree to work in astronomy?

It really just depends on what you want to do! Many astronomy careers are definitely built on physics and astronomy but the field is much larger than many people realize.

Want to become an astronomer or astrophysicist?

You will 99.99999% need a STEM degree to pursue this career path. It’s moreso about having a solid foundation in the principles so you are able to carry out whats required of the job. Astronomy and astrophysics is more than just observing observing objects!

I would say you need a physics, astronomy, math, or data analysis degree to really become a “true” astronomer.

See the list of degree routes you can go here: —> What degree should I get if I want to work in space?

Should you choose the STEM degree?

Choose it if you enjoy math, problem solving, want a lot of flexibility after you graduate, and enjoy understanding why things work.

Avoid STEM degrees if you dislike math or only want to do astronomy because you like space pictures (you could just do astrophotography as a hobby!).
